Advisement Class- Today is "Reading for Enjoyment!" Have your favorite or current book handy and lets drop everything and read! I will be reading "Cultivating Genius", by Dr. Ghouldy Muhammad. Remember, there are REP points to be earned for being prepared with your own book! 1st Period and 5th Period- Synchronous Live Opening: Today began our unit on Africa History. The students watched several videos that highlighted the achievements of several ancient to recently modern, African Kingdoms or Empires. VIDEO 1: PBSNewsHour "Why we're overdue to know the brilliance of Africa's civilizations" (6:11) VIDEO 2: 12 Greatest Ancient African Empires (16:51) Asynchronous: Students were tasked with completing a RAFT activity on one of the African Empires or Kingdoms we viewed in class. Sevearl articles about various kingdoms were made available to students at various Lexile (readin g levels). Face-to-face students provided a printed copy, and a printable copy of all the articles was uploaded to the African Kingdom_Empires or African History section of your class notebook. This assignment will be due on Thursday, 4 February 2021 for 1st and 5th period classes. Friday, 5 February 2021 for 2nd and 6th period classes. Students at home will be given a tutorial on using the drawing features in PowerPoint (Google Slides). 1st Period and 5th Period- Synchronous Live Opening: For today's lesson, students will be learn about four major ethnic groups and cultures on the continent of Africa. e Students will read two articles and complete an African Ethnic and Religious group chart. They will then use those notes as well as notes from a presentation to fill out a blank map of Africa. The map will highlight where certain ethnic groups live, family size, languages that are spoken to name a few. We will use elements from the Sketchnoting strategy, such as symbols, drawings, to name a few. Students will be shown several videos and images to faciliate this process. There are also several maps in the classroom that students will have the option to look at as well. Students will then read an article about the four climate zones that are covered in this region. The Sahara (desert), Sahel, Savanna, and the Tropical Rainforest. Students will be able to state where people live, what type of work they do, and how they travel in a specific climate zone from the reading.
